You can use a sprite sheet (in certain circumstances where you can cover the overhanging parts)

But I agree, being able to crop the base image would certainly be better!
And for whatever it’s worth, here’s the old conversation on the topic. @/AwesomeOnion seemed to think it might be a good idea once more users started using images (that was back in 2018). May be worth revisiting.

Lol And 4 years later I just realized the link I put in that topic to explain what a sprite sheet is was broken all along. Is was supposed to be this (but the last character in the URL didn’t get copied over)

How much different in size would the file be using sprite sheets vs individual images?
I also found out that project file size had some impact on performance. On my device (iPad Pro M1 12.9), I could make a project around 5-6 MB before I see any performance drops. On older devices, it drops slightly even at 400 KB. So I guess it makes sense why most people had critical performance (10-15 FPS) on STAR-LINK.

(yeah, I’ve seen the project – it’s just that covering things just never works once you get to a couple more objects interacting with each other)
Interesting, I’d still like to see it as well. Or, maybe some sort of built-in animation thing, but crop would be awesome!
I think it’d be smaller but file size isn’t really the issue – the issue is having to set image, set image, and set image for every change right now as opposed to a “crop” or “change pose” based on a variable.
It’s less of file size and more about current objects and how many things have to be rendered, at least I think that’s how it’d be.

Absolutely. You could theoretically use sprite sheets right now, if you made the distance between sprites big enough that the unused sprites were off screen. That would come with a few limitations, though.

When I make my games, I try to limit the amount of animations that occur per frame.
I limit text updating to once every 0.1 seconds, and I only update the image if absolutely necessary.
In STAR-LINK, I have a system I called “Dynamic Refresh” (why I named it this way? IDK), which only updates the tiles if they are on screen. Although it doesn’t actually improve anything (or I don’t think it does), it’s better than nothing.
