I always knew he was different, I remember when he was less than half a year old when he learned to walk a few weeks later he learned to talk. At age 2 he could do a 500 piece puzzle in a mater of minutes. He learned to read at age 3, the funny thing is his first book he read was The Odyssey by homer. Now he is 8 years old and has skipped 2nd grade so he is in 4th grade just like me. He could skip more grades but the teachers think he needs to be more social with the other kids.
"Piper get on your coat and shoes we need to go to a special place for Leo, you might like to bring your homework or a book." My mom yelled from downstairs interrupting my thinking.
"I'm coming." I shouted back
I grab my special homework( I do because everything is too easy so I make myself some) and a book called, The Son Of Neptune by Rick Riordan. I slip on some shoes and get a fleece since it is not tOo cold. I get into the car and buckle up, I lean over to do Leo's seat Belt because he does not like too do it himself.
"Mom where are we going?" I ask.
"We are going to a special place for Leo and you ." Replied my mom.
When we got to the as my mom called, "doctors office" a man named Dr. Badina cheeked us in and brought us to a waiting room. In the waiting room there was a DS, wii system, video games, and a bench for reading. This is the strangest waiting room because there is only 4 kids and 2 adults. I sit down on the bench and Leo goes over to something I didn't spot it looks like a computer, I walk over to Leo.
"Hay, what are you doing on that computer?" I asked my brother"Nothing, why?" Replied Leo.
"I just want to know but that's okay if you don't tell me." I explained to him.
Than a women's voice came over the loudspeaker, I saw a bunch of those kids that were on the DS and wii system shrieked and covered there ears. Even Leo covered his ears.
"Would Leo Valdez please come to the front desk."
"Leo and Piper come on we can go to the front desk,'' my mom said talking to Leo mostly because he was not even budging. We finally got Leo to get up and come with us to the front desk.
"Hi you must be Leo, Mrs. Valdez, and are you Piper Leo's sister?" Asked the doctor Dr. Badina.
We fallow the doctor into a special room with toys, blocks, puzzles, and a ton of other stuff. The plaque outside the door says, " IQ testing#45
"Doc what does that sign mean?" I ask with a pretend puzzled face. I am pretty sure they are testing my little brother for his IQ.
They take Leo in the room and close the door, I wonder if they are testing Leo for IQ.
"Mom, can I watch Leo's thing because I am studying autism tests"-
"What am I doing here" Leo explodes in a fit of anger
He starts trying to kick my mom and is squirming out of my poor moms grip.
"Let me deal with him I am quite used to this type of thing." Dr. Badina explains to my mom
The doc grips my brother with a firm grip but does not hurt Leo, he whispers something in Leo's ear but I can only hear some of it. Leo.... Oath.... Promise .... Come with.... And lastly calm.
"Okay, fine but only if you promise I will like it." Leo says back to the doc and follows him.
I wonder what's going on.
Look, I know I am different. I have always been and I guess now I except it, I skipped 2nd grade because I wanted to. I wanted more of a challenge but 3rd grade did not give me that. Than something new that my school was finally using excited me so much a literally yelled with excitement. My school was going to do MAP testing. My friend Peter does those tests at his school and says it is hard. I am so excited and giddy the first day of MAP testing, my sister was scared but I knew she would do pretty good because she is smart just not as smart as I am. The tests were a disappointment. They were too easy and just happened too see some of the stuff that a girl named Racheli did and I swear I almost started yelling the answers to her. Surprisingly she still got it wrong. Then I slipped,
"Ohh Racheli the answer you just got wrong well the answer is 2, 45, A and 890. I yelled. I started yelling.
"Leo, calm down." A voice I had never heard before did this grip thing ant told me to fallow him.
"My name is Mr. Berosole and you name is Leo?" He asked me in a kind voice
"Leo Valdez." I reply quietly.
"Hi, how was the testing?" He asked in a overly cheery way.
"Easy, but okay guess." I answed in that same quiet voice.
"How did Racheli get that answer wrong, it is so obvious. The question was what's 456-411 which is obviously 45 and then a bunch of other easy questions." I say but almost start yelling.
"What kind of questions did you get?" Mr. Berosole asked
"Easy stuff like answer this equation and the equation was 11234+5754=? But than it got a little harder with stuff like what is next in the sequence, 1,1,2,3,5,8,13,21,34,55? Which by the way the answer is 89." I say really fast.
"So you want a challenge?" He asked pretending to be puzzled
"Yup!" I exclaim happily
"How would a couple of tests work so I can see some work to give you some harder work?" He asked me.
"Okay, sure" I answer.
"Awesome!!" He tells me in that over cheer full voice.
"Can I please go back to the tech room to finish my MAP testing?"
"No, but you can finish it in a room with some other kids like you." He declared in a stern voice.
"Go to the office and say I sent you and to lead you to room 395." He says kindly.
I walk away and just now am I starting too take in what just happened. What does he mean by kids like me am I in trouble. All of those thoughts swirled around in my head like a dizziness potion had been put on me. I was surprised I could even walk in a straight line.
The doctor takes Leo by the arm and walks him into the room I start to read my book I get to my favorite part when another man comes but this time he goes to my mom.
"Hi, my name is Dave Derokoo and I see that you have an appointment for a girl." Says a young man no older than 35.
"Yes I do, it's for my older daughter Piper." My mom says to Mr. Derokoo.
" Piper please come with me." Says the man.
I get up and carry my book while he keeps on telling me that my mom can hold my book. We finally get to a room with the number 244. He opens the door and I walk in. There are two chairs one is a fancy chair and the other is a plastic blue one. I go for the blue one but Mr. Derekoo beat me to it.
"You can sit in a blue or the fancy chair." He says in a flat tone of voice.
"Is it okay if I sit in the blue chair." I ask in a really innocent voice.
I sit in a blue chair and look at Mr. Derekoo and look straight in his eyes. They are different colors, one is darkish blue and one is light brown.
I went to the front desk ant told them all of the info that man had told me to. They( Dr. Deeret and Mrs. Cusada) told me to go to the room across from the cafeteria. I walked there and it took exactly 238 steps to get to room 395. In the room a lady who looks fresh out of her college year stops and says-
"Well hello, you must be Leo Valdez. My name is Miss.Tamogan." She says in a surprising British accent.
"Hi, Miss. Tamogan." I said giddy wanting too see inside the classroom.
I got to finally come in the room and it was awesome, there was rolly-desks, 16 computers and a bunch of awesome stuff. Then I noticed a boy in my class who saw me in the classroom and started laughing his head off. That was when I knew I did not want to be caught in room 395. I got to go on the computer for 20 minutes and when I got off it was 3:15 and I needed to go back to my classroom. As usual my mom was the 2nd in line I rave to the cat but Piper beat me too it. When we get home mom says that we need to get into the car in 10.5 minutes and puts a timer on. I get out of the car to grab a comic book. I pick up an old time favorite Adventure Cat and Adventure Bug #5.
"Time to get in the car!!" Shouts my mom
"Coming" both me and Piper say at the exact same moment.
We got into the car and I sit down in my seat.
"Help?!?!?" Askes Piper.
"Uh huh!' I reply and she reaches forward to do it.
The car ride was about 15 minutes long and when we were finished I got out and ran into the building. A man stopped me and asked my name. I told him it was Leo and escorted me to a waiting room. I instantly find a computer and go on it. I find my favorite website and go on it. After 6.45 minutes a loudspeaker announces that I should come up. A woman named Dr. Berosole takes me to a room I do not want to go in. Then she whispers something in my ear.
"I heard you do not like easy stuff, this will be fun but challenging I promise." She tells me in a whispery voice.
"Fine." I reply in a small voice.
The strange man took me into the room and I sat in the blue chair.
"So do you know why you are doing in this room, don't you?" He asked in a voice that my English teacher would call a "awkward" Voice.
"What, I don't know." I Reply.
"Well your mom and the school would like to know your IQ." he said in a scientific voice.
"Can we start, like NOW." I tell him
"Sure." He says and hands me a packet of paper and a lot of different stuff.
How is it going to work... What will my IQ be... Will it be high... Will it be low... Is it average....those throats swirled through my head while i took the test. I only remember one question—how much longer. I had asked him.
"Only 5 more questions Piper, keep it up you can do it!" Mr. Derekoo replied to my question.
The last question was this...
"And finally question #350.. " he said but I had already stopped listing, all I was doing was answering... Answering... And answering.
"Good job Piper, your test is now over." He said to me.
"Finally that was the hardest test I ever took!" I said back in a exhausted but happy voice.
I got out of my blue chair and walked/jogged over too my mother and my father who apparently had just came back from work.
"Papa how did the experiment turn out." I asked him.
"Good!" He replied.
"How was the test honey." My mom asked.
"Hard but Okay, I guess." I say trying not to look too tired.
"Mrs.Valdez, Mr.Valdez Leo is done with his test. A woman came out with Leo in her hands( not literally.).
"Leo, how was the test?" My mom asked.
"A let down, too easy." He said not trying too sound snobby but he did kind of sound like a little genius.
"The scores will be handed out tomorrow, your schools will get them." The lady told my parents.
"Thank you, so much." My parents told them and walked out the door and we got in the blue suburban.
"That guy lied to me." I told my parents as I got in the car
"How did he LIE." Asked my mom.
"He told me that the test would be hard but it was so easy." I complain.
"Well it was espoused to be hard." Piper said a little annoyed with me.
It was not hard but I think I did okay. That was al I thought about for the rest of the night.
