Why do we put “sorry for the tag” after tagging OMTL?

Disclaimer: This is my opinion, it may not be right

Double-Disclaimer: Read the whole post for full understanding

So first a question. Why did you join the OMTL? To get tagged to interesting things right?
We tag omtl so people see the topic. Of course there are guidelines, else it could get overused. So why do we say “Sorry if you didn’t want to be tagged” after tagging the OMTL? It makes no sense. The reason you joined the OMTL was probably (Not guaranteed this was the reason) to be notified of new contests and cool topics. In other words, you wanted to be tagged. So why get angry when you get tagged?

There are a few sensible reasons for this:

  1. It could be a misuse, breaking the OMTL guidelines
  2. It could be unimportant
  3. It could be non-related to code
  4. POMTL could’ve been used in the scenario

But if you don’t want to get tagged just leave the group, don’t get angry at people tagging it for something code related and interesting.

As I said before, I’m not sure this is right, it’s just weird how people do it. The OMTL was originally the Friendly Mass Tag List if I’m correct, and the Friendly Mass Tag List was a list of people who wanted to be tagged for stuff like competitions. The OMTL has the same point.

Do you agree?

  • No

I did SBYP and did not find anything relating closely to this.

This is very true GCC, and also another point:

There are a lot of inactive users on the OMTL group, maybe we could remove them?

Or we just tag omtl less when not necessary. That phrase is sometimes used only to avoid flags

Otherwise agreed.

That’s why I said there are a few sensible reasons, a misuse is one of them.

This is so right. Finally someone has made a topic about this!

There are so many people who are inactive or have left on the tag list, maybe we could remove them

Silvery also said this and i agree so when people come on for the first time in months they don’t get 400 notifications.

Yes. Everyone gets triggered whenever someone uses omtl

But they joined, their fault if they don’t want to be tagged.
