General Leadership Questions, Concerns and Compliments topic

I agree with this logic.

I think that leaders just don’t want any prolonged coronavirus talk because it might lead to revealing PI.

(And that is probably why they don’t want corona talk anymore.)

Yea, they’re just doing their job, which is completely fine. I do think we should have some talking freedom, to a certain extent of course.

Small thing

Does it sometimes feel like you’re told to GBOT but with a ‘compliment’? Like, for example someone posts an off topic gif and, instead of saying “stay on topic” the person says “Cool, but let’s gbot”. If I were told that, I wouldn’t take it as a compliment really. More like a nudge to GBOT.

A solution to this is to find a way to relate the convo back to code by saying something like “have you thought about coding that? It would be awesome!” And let the sort-of off topic user make their own choice whether to keep being off topic or stay on topic instead of just having them told to GBOT.

Just came to my mind, I was planning on doing this for a while but forgot until I was reminded

Yeah I’ve seen that. It’s a lot nicer than being told to gbot directly, but it kinda defeats the point of the compliment. Switching the gears to coding related convo, and suggesting the user code/draw/recreate the gif or whatever it may be, is imo a better solution

Don’t just take my word for it, since I can’t be trusted.

Agreed with 1st paragraph
Disagree with 2nd paragraph, you’re trusty

According to some, I’m not. I’ll take your word though

You do have a point.

For example:

Star girl is a forumer who posted an off-topic image

Then lets say for example a leader tells her this…

Nice :)) but stay on topic Star girl.

What if the leader says this instead…

Nice :)) but please stay on topic Star girl.

Does it make the compliment seem more genuine and the whole post more polite? (I’d say yes sorta but I don’t know what you think)

I feel like there’s just this negative stigma around the term GBOT now.

“Let’s GBOT now” seems less friendly than “Let’s get back on topic now,” even though the latter is just the same phrase, but with the acronym typed out, doesn’t it?

That’s not exactly what I was saying—though that does make it seem nicer

I meant for example star girl is an off topic forumer and posts an image

Leader: Coolio, but GBOT please

Instead of saying that something like this could be said:

Leader: Coolio, that’d be a nice pixel art. If you want to make it one I’d be happy to help:)

Or

Leader: Do you have a subscription? If so making a photo editor using images like that would be :ok_hand:

Yes somehow. I think it’s because of the fact that gbot is usually all caps and it gives the feeling that someone’s yelling at you.

Yes those would be strategic ways to steer a convo back on topic.

So basically, discreetly steering the conversation to talking about the same subject, but in a code-related manner?

Yes, plus the fact that several months ago, it did actually seem like GBOT was yelled.

Let’s get more compliments here, shall we? Just the nice thing to do

hey y’all!
With the recent events regarding the strange edit notification bugs and the removal of the edit feature for all non leaders, I’d like to ask for a bit of clarification on why it was removed, and if it’s a temporary or permanent thing. It’s not a big deal, I was just curious. Thank you!

Yeah, I think we all need an explanation

Hi there!

What kind of forum content usually requires editing?

Typically users editing in pictures for their portfolios, and users fixing typos or adding suggestions to their coded stories.

Along with adding in chapter links, adding new characters, or adding to tag lists. I’m sure there’s more, but these are some of the biggest sources for edits that I know of in the community.

Oh, and user to leader private conversations! :))
