YOUR PREVIOUS CHOICE: Go left!
You look to the left and start running. Jade follows as you run towards the woods. You can hear the bang of guns from behind you. You just hope that those guards are lousy shots.
A bullet zooms close by your head and you scream, running faster and faster. Another tears through the side of Jade's shoe, and she gasps in pain and shock as it grazes her foot. She's fine, you think, your legs carrying you as fast as they can.
You realize you're in the woods. You jump across a creek, hopping from rock to rock. Jade limps over and catches up with you, breathing hard. You both collapse onto the wet leaf litter, shivering up at the huge, majestic trees. You're freezing cold. It must be winter, as the trees have no leaves and there's ice around the edges of the creek.
You can hear the gunshots stop, the only sound being Canadian geese flying overhead with loud, mournful honks that seem to echo eerily around the whole silent world.
"I think they've given up on the chase... for now," you manage to mumble, lying on your back, staring up on the gray, icy sky and the bare tops of trees.
You can only hear gasps for breath from Jade.
You sit up quickly, worry suddenly striking into your heart like an icicle. "Jade? A-are you alright?"
Jade is sitting with her hands clutching her foot. "Jade! Did th-" You don't finish your sentence. The guards might not have been such terrible shots after all.
She slowly takes off her torn right shoe and sock, revealing a bloody gash in the side of her foot. "Stars above," you mutter. "That is definitely not good."
Jade shakes her head and puts the sock and shoe back on. "I'll be fine. It isn't really bleeding... that much." she says quietly, and starts limping onwards.
You look around unsurely and follow her, hoping she's right. "Maybe we should find a spot to eat some of this food." Jade shrugs her agreement and nods towards what looks like a large ditch. "Look over there. There's some sort of ravine. Do you want to look around in there?"
The ravine is level with the ground down near the creek, but as the riverbank rises up, it forms a little area cut into the ground. You walk into it and walk through it a ways. Then you see a little hidden area at the end where the walls of clay are very high. It's the most wide and open part of the ravine with lots of room to walk around, about the size of a small bedroom. It's partly covered by a roof of thorns.
You sit down on the smooth, packed-down mud floor, opening the sack of food. You haven't eaten any yet, and with a huge grin, you bite into a lettuce-and-ham sandwich. "We're officially out of that building of horrors!" Jade says through a mouthful of pineapple. You sigh with contentment and relief.
Other than the cold, you've found a perfect place to stay until you can find a way off of this planet and back to your lives. I'm never joining the army again after this, or at least never making deals with the enemy, you think, staying hopeful that you're going to get home.
Jade has climbed up to the top of the ravine and is looking around. "Guess what?" she calls down. "There's a farm or something on the other side of the woods, and there's some sort of building on it! Do you want to check it out? Maybe they can show us the nearest spaceport or something. It does look a little far away, though."
You're about to answer, when suddenly you feel a couple drops of water on the top of your head. "Oh stars, is that rain?" you gasp, hoping you aren't in for a storm.
Jade quickly slides back down into the ravine. You both huddle under the roof of thorns. "I think it is," she says, as the forest explodes into the sound of cold rain pattering loudly on fallen leaves.
